Join our I AM THIS LAND creative storytelling project

Here’s how:

  1. Come up with something you’ve never shared before about your immigration story and life in the U.S. (Think of this as the PostSecret of diversity in America.)
  2. Come up with a way to make it visual and shareable.   (If you’re unable, still send us your text story and we’ll design it!)
  3. Send your story to comments@breakthrough.tv!  See it posted!

Here’s why:

At this time last year, we put out a call for fun, inspiring videos about diversity for our first annual I AM THIS LAND contest. Of all the amazing videos we received, the winner was Role Call, created by a class at  Flushing International High School in New York City. The school is an incredible community of recent immigrants from 40 countries - all with so many stories to tell and so many ways to tell them.

Our new I AM THIS LAND website  is updated daily with FIHS students’ personal stories and interviews about what “I AM THIS LAND” and life in America means to them.  Here’s an excerpt from Elizabeth, a student at Flushing International High School:

My community is very different from where I was before. In Mexico, people were all the same with the same traditions, and language. I liked it there because I felt more confident.  I grew up there.  Now, that I’ve been in New York for five years I have found a different community. People are from different countries with different culture and language. But I think that it’s good because we are all here for a better future.  (Edited with permission)

In early 2012, we’ll be posting 20 new stories that are now being animated by the FIHS media arts class. (See photos of the clay-mation puppets below!)

Stick around! Read some stories and submit your own!
